Saint Dorotheus says: "Other virtues, being done as a duty, have the
meaning of only a tribute, which everyone has to pay, like the citizens of a
country to the king; monasticism, non-possession of money and celibacy, as
virtues taken up of one’s own will, have the meaning of precious gifts brought
to God because of love, just like in a country famous people, beside their
tributes, bring gifts to the king and in return they receive rich awards, great
honor and ranks."
